October 8th 2005
Ten years ago Hello there...
Already the 8th of October...my sister's 10th wedding anniversary that she is celebrating in Venezia, Italia with hubby. 10 years ago, I donned a purple bridesmaid's dress, refused to get my make-up done by the lady that came to the house because I didn't want to look like a clown in person, yet show up "with color" in the photos. I did my hair myself, while everyone else got their "up dos" done by a different lady at the house. If I could've, I probably would've worn combat boots with my dress. Ten years ago, I swallowed my tears as I sang some John Denver songs in church with my friend, John from Michigan. He barely knew my sister, and I looked over and he was waterworks. He was doing it for me so that I could get through my songs. (Thanks, John)
Ten years ago, I was still listening to Debbie Gibson...(T.M.I.)ok- along with some cool stuff, too, like REM, The Sundays, and the newly solo Jonatha Brooke.
Ten years ago, I was a sophomore in college, 19 years old, and I "said goodbye" to my sister as we have always known each other. Now she has a different last name (that I *still* can't get used to- no offense, Frank) and 3 adorable chick-a-dees that I worship.
Thanks for reminiscing with me.
Last week, Kathy Mattea, (Grammy-winning country singer/songwriter) came to Boston for some clinics at Berklee College of Music, where I teach voice lessons. I went to a few of them, and was just completely inspired and renewed by everything she had to say. At the first voice clinic, she was demonstrating a certain vocal technique and started singing this Christmas song called "Mary Did You Know". I about started bawling my eyes out because I forgot that she had sung that song...It's a song that my father strongly encourages me (didn't want to say "forces me") to sing every Christmas at church. Wow. It brought me back. She also talked about interpretting songs and how if you hear or are distracted by the actual music or melody, than the singer isn't doing their best to bring the story to you. Wow. Lots more geeky voice stuff that I love, that I'll spare you from. Anyway, if by some slim chance you're reading this journal entry, Kathy, THANK YOU. I learned so much from you...I sing and teach differently now. Thank you.
Ok, so, here's what I've been reading and listening to lately. ...just in case you're looking for some good stuff to keep you occupied.
Just finished "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver. When Kyler stayed with me last month, she pulled it out of her bag and it ended up that we were reading it at the same time. :-)
I just started "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey. OK, stop making fun of me... I know it's Oprah's Book Club pick, but you should know that I love Oprah. And, I can't put this book down.
I've been listening to Aimee Mann...Lost In Space (my favorite) and her new one, The Forgotten Arm. What else?..... Suzanne Vega- Songs in Red and Grey..an old favorite....Kathleen Edwards- Back To Me- a WHOLE lot...especially at the gym or jogging by the river...lots of Kim Richey, and the other day I pulled out (ok, well, I scrolled to on my iPod) Willie Nelson's Teatro with Emmylou Harris. I haven't listened to that in a few years, and it's just breathtakingly gorgeous.
In a couple of hours, I'm lucky enough to be able to get into the Paradise Lounge to see a private concert by David Grey...I can't wait!!! ah, the perks of dating the sound engineer.
Well, I'm off to get this Saturday started. I'll be in touch.
