sweet home alabama- for one night I just arrived in Birmingham, AL. My first visit to this lovely state. Can cross this one off of the list, I guess. It's really fun entering a state for the first time. I have no idea what to expect and the world is completely open to me. It's quite exciting. I like that the stereotypes in my little head are broken sometimes.
Rewind to my days in Atlanta this weekend....Friday was nice show at the Higher Grounds Coffeehouse. What a charming place. I felt like I was in Colorado in there. (Or at least what I imagine Colorado to be...there I go stereotyping again) The inside of the cafe was decorated like a log cabin. Good food and drinks and lovely staff. Cute stage.
Then, Saturday night was the big Eddie's Attic Shootout. ...more like Washout. My bass player/producer of So Long My Love, Richard Gates, flew down to play the competition with me. Well, we only played the first round, and got beat out by a woman from England who told the audience that she sold her motorcycle to come to this competition. Guess I should've told them something like that....like I sold a kidney or something to pay for gas. Oh well. ...trying to be graceful about it all.
It was wonderful to meet up with Heather Combs...a friend from college who was also competing that night. She got beat out by a Tiny Tim- like ukele player. hmmm..... I also ran into Jon Black, who I met at the open mic down there in January. ....and Nathan Beaver who we both can't remember how we know each other, but we both looked strangely familiar to each other. It was fun to hang with these guys and Richard regardless of our losing status. ;-)
I also had time to meet up with my voice teacher from junior high and high school! We had a lot of catching up to do and the Starbucks staff had to kick us out at the end of the night.
Then I did some sightseeing in Atlanta with my beau, who flew down to spend a day with me. We saw the tourist-y Atlanta Underground Mall...(I'll be honest- it doesn't compare to Jersey malls, even if it IS underground) We browsed the Coca-Cola factory gift shop...and then got tipped off to a cool part of town where we did a bunch of window shopping, followed by a couple of pitchers of margueritas.
....and here I am in Birmingham. This evening, I open for Edie Carey! I haven't seen her in a long while, besides the occasional coincindental gig on the same night, which tonight is as well.
Well, the battery on my laptop is about to go....so, until next time...
reporting from Panera Bread in Birmingham, AL. ciao.
