biker chick Hello from Nashville. I arrived here yesterday to my friend, Cathy's house and she took me out for a spin on her new motorcycle. Woah. I had only been on one motorcycle ride before that...when I was about 19, my friend, John's dad took me out for a spin when I visited them in MI. He had really spiffy helmets with microphones in them so we could talk to each other, and he played John Denver "Country Roads" in the headphones. We were hardcore.
So, although I trust Cathy with my life, I have to admit, I thought on some of those turns she was going to lose me off of the back. (I didn't realize that there was a back rest, because I was too busy clutching onto Cathy for dear life) The ride was like a fresh brewed cup of coffee (brewed extra strong) and when I climbed off of the bike, I had the jitters. Thanks, Cath.
After that, I headed down to the 'ol Douglas Corner writers' night. (That would be a euphamism for "open mic"...only difference was that it was "in the round") I haven't seen an open mic quite like this one before. I'm not talking about the "in the round" format...I'm talking about the cast of characters i saw up on stage. I couldn't have created more interesting characters for a movie. There was the normal short-haired frat boy country singer, the straight faced-never-crack-a-smile lady with a mullet, high waisted blue dungerees (oh yes, these weren't jeans- they were dungerees) and moccasins with socks, and she was gulping down her glass of wine on stage while the others were having their turns. When she played her songs, I seriously had to take a second and think, " Is this woman brilliant or awful?" I haven't concluded either way. Then there was the sing-to-background-tracks guy with songs with a positive message, and inevitably he tried to get some audience participation out of us through clapping and singing his background vocals. And then there was the curly haired Dave Matthews wanna-be. Oh, and that was just a few of them. One guy was too cool to sit on his stool in a row with the rest of the performers. Instead, he sat on the floor in the background and had his beer, cup of tea, and his cigarettes with lighter on his stool for easy access. And, he just couldn't wait for the round to be over- he needed a smoke right during the others' songs. He was very cool. Too-cool-for-the-stool-guy.
I really love playing shows in the south...especially in NC and Atlanta, but I am such a fish out of water sometimes. If I get bitchy and impatient, I just blame it on the fact that I'm from NJ and I'm allowed- even SUPPOSED to be like that.
So, today is my day off. I headed to the Mall this afternoon because that's what Jersey girls do when they're homesick. It's been on and off thundering a little, so I think I'll take in a movie this evening.
Your 'fraidy-cat, bitchy biker chick,
